Horse Bowl is an amazing program offered through 4H. It’s a quiz bowl all about horses! Teams consist of 3-5 participants. There’s a single state competition held in May (at least that’s when it is here in Wisconsin). Teams must travel to the competition location. Some teams travel the night before and find a hotel to stay in overnight. Our team travels the night before as it’s a few hour drive for us. Our team also studies once a week starting in about November (taking times off around holidays). Questions can be on any topic from breeds and colors to parasites and reproduction to everything in between so it covers everything anyone could possibly know about horses. Senior teams can have the option to go on regional and national level trips if they place well. Each team must also have a coach. The coach is responsible for having resource books available in the rounds in case a question needs to be argued. These argued questions can sometimes mean the difference between playing another round or ending your day with that round. The coach CANNOT be the same coach for two different teams even if the teams are different age division. Our team has past horse bowl members who have aged out come back to be coaches or even our parents will be coaches. Parents who have been in the group for about the same time as their youth doesn’t always mean they know a lot either though, but by being the coach not only are the youth learning about horses, but the parent is also and can help better with studying.
